Sunday May 11 - Windermere - Leigh
I had a good sleep in this morning - the drive up here yesterday was a bit tiring after spending the previous week on foot and/or public transport. Kaye went up to the laundry and did some washing and I had breakfast and tapped away at the diary for an hour or two.
In the afternoon, Kaye and I went on the Windermere Cruises Yellow Cruise on Lake Windermere on board the MV Teal, a steamboat. I took lots of photos as we steamed towards Lakeside, a small town on the southern end of the lake.
Man has been at or around the lakes for a long time - up at Ambleside in the Langdale Pikes, a stone axe factory has been found dating back to 4000bc!
During the criuse I chatted to a farmer from Wales who was here on holidays for a week, visiting his son who lives here. His farm house in Wales is on 200 hectares of land and it was built during the 1400's out of huge stone blocks. He can't fathom how they ever moved, let alone built a house with, these blocks. His window sills are almost 2 feet deep! Interestingly he loves farming so much (14-18 hour days, 7 days per week) that he recently turned down an offer of £750,000 for his land - crazy stuff!
Back at Bowness we grabbed a bite to eat and drove back to the cottage for the night. 11/05/2003 11:59:30 AM
