Our European Holiday

A side trip to Bath and Stone Henge …

An early start for a Sunday morning but we boarded the bus about 7.45am. We travelled along the A4 heading west from London to our first stop, which was Stone Henge. We parked across the road and wandered through an underpass to get to the stones.

What they might have looked like when built How they might have been built... Stonehenge panorama

You aren’t allowed to walk right up to the stones any more, but they have created a wooden walkway that circumnavigates the stones. They are huge from this distance so must be incredible up close and personal. Amazing to think it was so long ago that people were able to manoeuvre objects that big and heavy. I wonder about the size of a crane that would be needed today to make such a structure.

From here we went to Bath. I knew nothing about Bath and had no expectations about this part of the tour. Bath is on the River Avon and is a popular weekend destination of Londoners and other Brits. It has a Roman bath building for way back when that is rather interesting in itself. The displays are very well set out, and where they have only found a few pieces of a much larger object, there are pics to show where the pieces probably belong and what the whole object would look like. We got to see the underground rooms and the springs that were used to fill the baths. I had no idea what Roman baths were like so it was all most intriguing.

We then got to wander in different parts of the city centre. I found a fudge shop where I got a real bargain – 5 for the price of 3 – and a health food store that sold rice crackers just to give some balance. There were some really good views along the banks of the river however Leigh had the camera and he wandered to different parts of the city.

Leigh ended up visiting a computer game store (no surprises) to compare the price of Sony Playstations. Not surprisingly, they’re about the same as back home. Leigh also found the smallest pub in Bath and (of course) had to sample it’s ale.

Bath's smallest pub Here's proof.

On the drive back to London we passed Heathrow where Leigh managed to photograph (albeit fuzilly) one of the last landings of a Concorde, which BA had decided to put to pasture. R.I.P. Concorde.

One of the last BA Concorde landings.
